Deputy Commissioner Vrabec grew up Northern Illinois. After obtaining an associate’s degree in law enforcement from the College of Lake County in Illinois he moved to Fairbanks, Alaska where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. While going to school at UAF, he was a security officer for the campus before a police department was formed. Two weeks after graduation, Vrabec joined the Soldotna Police Department as an officer. After six years with the Soldotna Police Department, he moved closer to his hometown and took a job as a crime prevention officer in Evanston, Illinois, just north of Chicago.  A year later, he was offered a sergeant position with the newly formed UAF Police Department in Fairbanks. While there, he attended the 186th session of the FBI National Academy. He moved through the ranks until he was appointed the chief of police in 1997. While in this position, he obtained his master’s degree in police administration in 2005 from UAF. He stayed with the UAF department for 14 years until 2005. At that time, he was offered the position of the director of the Alaska Police Standards Council.  After moving to Juneau, he served in that capacity until taking the Deputy Commissioner position on June 1, 2011.

Vrabec enjoys many of the outdoor adventures that Alaska offers.  He has two children that are out of high school and pursuing their own adventures.
